BAYERN WITHOUT DUO FOR BREMEN CLASH
Reigning European champions Bayern Munich will have to navigate the upcoming German Bundesliga meeting with Werder Bremen without two of their most important players. The Bavarian giants host Werder Bremen and the starting XI duo of Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich won't be available because of respective injuries.
Canadian international Alphonso Davies has been a revelation for Bayern Munich at left-back and has become a key member of their defence in recent months. He was one of the best defenders in the Champions League last season as Bayern Munich beat all other challengers to win the competition. The 20-year-old has been sidelined since he tore ankle ligaments in the Bundesliga win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of October.
Davies was forced off in the opening minutes of the league encounter which Bayern won by beating Frankfurt 5-0 at the Allianz Arena courtesy three goals from star striker Robert Lewandowski. Substitutes Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala added late goals to make it a dominant scoreline for the hosts.
French World Cup winner Lucas Hernandez replaced Alphonso Davies in his left-back role during the Frankfurt game and has been deputising for him since then. Davies is expected to be on the sidelines until December at least.
For Joshua Kimmich, the petite utility player suffered an injury to his meniscus in the last game, an impressive 3-2 win at rivals Borussia Dortmund before the just concluded international break. He has been ruled out till the New Year meaning that he will also miss the rest of the group stage campaign in the Champions League. Just like what was obtainable with Alphonso Davies, Kimmich was a regular for the Bayern Munich side that won the Champions League title last term.
The last league win over Dortmund ensured that Bayern opened a two-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings and they can extend that lead with a win over Werder Bremen in their Matchday 8 clash at the Allianz Arena in one of the afternoon kickoffs on Saturday before nearest challengers RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund play their games on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon respectively. On their part, opponents Werder Bremen have drawn their last four league outings ahead of their trip to face the German champions.
