Bayern Munich chief reveals how the club were able to sign Coutinho

Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that his close relationship with Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu aided the transfer of Philippe Coutinho to the club. The Bavarian giants have landed the Brazilian’s signature on a season-long loan deal for £7.7m but they have the option to sign him on a permanent basis next summer.

Speaking to reporters, Rummenigge said that the club were in negotiations with the Blaugrana for the playmaker for some time and it was not difficult to convince the Spanish champions due to his good relations with Bartomeu, he told: "We've been working on bringing in Philippe Coutinho for quite some time and we're very happy that we've been able to complete this transfer. My thanks go especially to Barcelona President Josep Bartomeu, with whom I have a very good and friendly relationship. Coutinho is a global star and our fans will be delighted."

Elsewhere, Coutinho was likewise pleased with the opportunity to represent the Bundesliga holders following a frustrating period at the Camp Nou. Shortly after he was unveiled, he said: "For me, this move means a new challenge in a new country with one of the best clubs in Europe. I'm very much looking forward to that. I have big ambitions and I'm convinced that I can achieve them together with my new team-mates."

Bayern had looked short of experienced attacking depth during the recent German Super Cup clash against Borussia Dortmund where they suffered a 2-0 loss. Thereafter, leading striker Robert Lewandowski went public to suggest the need for reinforcements and that may have contributed towards the recent purchases.

Besides Coutinho, Ivan Perisic has also arrived on a season-long loan from Inter Milan and the duo should get regular gametime with the German champions. Apart from the duo, Bayern have the likes of Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry, who would be competing for the attacking positions.
