Real Madrid Deny Contact With Robert Lewandowski
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has clarified that the club have made no contact whatsoever with the representative of Robert Lewandowski. A recent report from Mundo Deportivo suggested that the Poland international could be on the brink of sealing a summer agreement to join Los Blancos with super-agent Pini Zahavi having finalised a two-year deal with director general Jose Angel Sanchez.
However, according an exclusive from Münchner Merkur, these claims have been rebuffed with Perez clarifying to the Bayern hierarchy that they have not made any approach behind their back. It is rather unusual for Perez to respond to any news outlet, but the move could have been done with a view to keeping a good relation with the Bundesliga champions despite their European rivalry on the field.
Lewandowski has openly criticised Bayern’s transfer policy in the past, but he still remains an influential player in their ranks as they go through a transition phase. The Bavarian outfit are on course to secure a sixth straight league title this season, but the club’s board are pretty much looking into the future with the focus on pursuing young and upcoming prospects.
Schalke’s Leon Goretzka, who has committed to the club on a contract which becomes active during the summer, has been one. There could be further more additions on the field, though without the need to overspend. Liverpool’s Emre Can has been another player who has been credited with a potential return to the Allianz Arena and it will be interesting to see whether Bayern can ward off interest from the likes of Juventus and Manchester City to pursue a Bosman move.
Bayern have been pitted against Sevilla in the last-eight of the Champions League, and it looks likely that they will at least reach the semi-finals of the elite competition. The Munich outfit went on to win the European crown during Jupp Heynckes’ previous season in-charge back in 2013.
