SOMMER SETS BUNDESLIGA RECORD AGAINST BAYERN
Swiss international shot stopper Yann Sommer was in inspired form as he helped his Borussia Moenchengladbach team to a battling 1-1 draw at the home of defending champions Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga. Sommer made a record 19 saves in the Gladbach goal to secure a point for his team from the game.
Swiss goalkeeper Sommer faced 35 shots against Bayern Munich with 20 of the shots on target. The only shot on target he failed to save was from German international Leroy Sane as he scored the equaliser for the hosts with seven minutes left on the clock to cancel out the opening goal from Frenchman Marcus Thuramin the first half. Thuram had scored the first goal of the game two minutes off the half-time break.
Sommeralmost repelled Bayern for the whole game before his goal was breached by the strike from Sane. With his performance, he was able to maintain the unbeaten start to the season made by his team. Gladbach have now won two and drawn two of their opening four league games for a total of eight points. They are sixth on the German Bundesliga table at the moment.
For Bayern Munich, they are still the top team in the German Bundesliga. They maintain their place at the top of the table despite the home draw against Borussia Moenchengladbach whom they didn’t beat in any of their three meetings in all competitions last season. Bayern Munich are away from Union Berlin in second spot by goal difference as both teams have ten points from four games.
